The Legend of Unsinkable
Opening Letter
Dear Living Legends,
A long time ago, perhaps among ancestral lands far away, the very thing we held in common—in community—was oral storytelling.
Oral storytelling offered us intimacy—where audiences and storytellers blended blood and bone through physical closeness and proximity. Circular seating reflected the cyclical nature of land and time all around us. Stories were malleable and flexible to meet needs. Bonds were braided by inclusion in a loose creative process that could infinitely reshape stories like a multiverse: an empowering type of agency.
For those of us who may be or feel distanced from this practice, let’s wander together—wonder—into how we might reclaim and relearn this shared language as a part of our present, not our past…
Both oral storytelling and writing coexist in this book—one is not privileged above the other. This book blends the two with practices of graphic novels and picture books, sharing the actual Legend of Unsinkable while weaving you into its present-day form.
Out in the world, we know there’s an endless supply of writing work- books, mostly curated as writing advice for aspiring or current professional writers.
But the purpose of gathering and finding words—like rock, stone, and shell on a beach—need not be creating in any particular form. Which rocks have a comforting texture? Which stones catch your eye? Which shells can you hear a story inside?
Words can simply be words—in any way that supports us or our people. And this is often the hardest part when we glance across the vast oceanscape of our lives and experiences.
The Legend of Unsinkable offers a space to co-create: find words, rooted in our stories and experiences, with no expectation of a finished story, poem, memoir, etc. My role, as your guide, is to craft a world for you to safely move through, lifting the expectation and burden for you to create something complete or heal perfectly.
Built into the legend are pauses and decompressions. Pauses are mind/ thought oriented, such as responding to questions by finding words inside you—past, present, and future. Decompressions are aligned, but more body/spirit oriented, encouraging the creation of something beyond, around, above, or beneath the words you find.
You belong. Just be. Welcome ashore. What do you see?
In the water—nature’s intentionally imperfect mirror—I ask that you see rather than look at yourself.
Looking, as if at another, separated and from higher ground, won’t move your heart, spirit, soul, body, or mind. Your reflection is you, even when distorted. This is the essential risk—and perhaps sacrifice—needed to begin not only living a legend, but to begin being a living legend.
Allow the watery mirror to loop around your toes, circle your ankles, wash your shins, soften your knees, and soon…my goodness…you’re here, you’ve moved, fully with the water.
You will soon see the whole of your being, as you really are. It might scare you.
But do not worry, you will learn to be alone without being lonely. I will help you let go of my hand without forgetting the energy of touch.
And do not fear. Together at first: shall we?
All (are welcome) aboard,
Mikaela
About This Workbook
and Its childhood
In early 2024, I was, not unusually, thinking about writing. But I was thinking about writing outside of being a writer. What can words be? What can they do? Especially for folks who aren’t trying to be writers or write a “finished product.” So, here at Unsinkable, we began a year-long newsletter, between spring 2024 & 2025, offering storytelling & creative prompts. Uniquely, alongside these, we offered a fictional folktale to follow: The Legend of Unsinkable.
The story & newsletter were a wonderful success, engaging nearly 1,000 members of our community. And when it concluded almost a year ago, I began to see a new life for it. How could we create something that our community could hold in their hands, close to their hearts, and visually visit whenever they need to?
Thus, The Legend of Unsinkable workbook was born. It was a year-long labour of love, taking its final shape as a custom-illustrated, interactive storybook. The book is written specifically for our community & illustrated by the unbelievably talented Wing Lam Chan. The Legend of Unsinkable is at once an intimate folktale & a fierce friend. Built to nurture the cyclical proximity & relationship between storyteller & audience, your story will become part of the legend as you write or draw your thoughts on dedicated craft pages. We invite you, wholeheartedly, to become part of this not-so-fictional Legend of Unsinkable.
