Being Unsinkable means having an unwavering resilience and a passionate spirit that allows you to “rise above” life's challenges and adversities, no matter how daunting they may seem. It's about embodying the determination to keep moving forward, to find strength in the face of darkness, and to inspire others with your determined courage.

My journey to becoming Unsinkable began during my university athletic career, alone not knowing exactly who, where, and what I am. It is dark, there are no cheers from the fans, no bright lights from the stadium. The smell of fresh-cut grass is no longer familiar, and above all, the most enjoyable experience of my life has now become a nightmare. Lost and confused, time has stopped, and the biggest life obstacle now stands in my way.

Along the way, I encountered numerous obstacles that tested my mental resilience. One challenge that significantly impacted me was my struggle with mental health. I faced periods of intense self-doubt, anxiety, and depression, which at times made it difficult to see a way forward. However, it was during these moments of darkness that I discovered the true extent of my inner strength and the power of resilience.

Throughout my university athletic career, I faced the challenge of balancing rigorous training schedules, academic responsibilities, and the pressures of competitive sports. The relentless pursuit of excellence took its toll on my mental well-being, and I found myself fighting with doubts about my abilities and my worth as an athlete.

Yet, within these challenges, I found opportunities for growth and transformation. I sought help and support from friends, coaches, and mental health professionals, who taught me invaluable strategies to navigate the rough waters of my mind. With their guidance, I began to build a resilient mindset, one that enabled me to bounce back stronger after every setback.

My triumphs came in the form of overcoming those inner battles. I learned to appreciate the journey rather than obsess over the destination. Each personal best, every small improvement, and every victory over my mental struggles became a testament to the Unsinkable spirit within me. I just needed the right people and mindset to realize that it was already there and now I share this story with you as my form of mental clarity, thought, and above all—therapy, as we navigate all that comes with the beginning of a new school year.

My university athletic career taught me that mental health is just as vital as physical health. It highlighted the importance of seeking help, being open about our struggles, and embracing vulnerability as a sign of strength, not weakness. I discovered that true growth happens when we acknowledge our challenges and use them as stepping stones to elevate ourselves (and those around us).

I invite you to think about what you’re doing now—during the summer or through a period of transition—to take care of your mental health before school starts. Embrace these words of wisdom on your journey to becoming Unsinkable:

  1. Embrace your vulnerabilities: They are not flaws but the seeds of strength waiting to be nurtured.

  2. Seek support: There's no shame in asking for help. Friends, family, coaches, and mental health professionals can be invaluable allies.

  3. Celebrate progress: Acknowledge every small step forward, as they lead to significant strides in the long run.

  4. Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend facing similar challenges.

  5. Learn from setbacks: They are not failures but opportunities for growth and learning.

  6. Detail the work you're doing and what led you to it.

Inspired by my transformative journey, I am now deeply committed to advocating for mental health and wellness. I've become a motivational speaker, sharing my story with others in hopes of igniting the flame of resilience within them. Additionally, I'm actively involved in daily mental health awareness conversations both on and off social media (@HeyMarcusSmith)

Through my work, I aim to break the stigma surrounding mental health and create a supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking help. By sharing my story and experiences, I strive to empower others to embrace their struggles, knowing that they too can emerge Unsinkable. Moreover, I actively promote the importance of self-care and mental well-being within the athletic community, fostering an environment where mental health is prioritized as much as physical performance.

In conclusion, my university athletic career played a pivotal role in teaching me to ride even the scariest waves and storms. It taught me the significance of mental health and how overcoming challenges can lead to incredible personal growth. Through sharing my story and advocating for mental health, I hope to inspire others to cultivate their own Unsinkable spirit, knowing that they have the power to rise above any storm life may bring. Remember, you too possess the strength to navigate life's challenges and emerge as an Unsinkable force—a breaking wave in and of yourself—ready to inspire and empower others along the way.
